Boulder City Turf Limits

Turf limits restrict or prohibit the amount of grass to be planted at new properties. The restrictions prohibiting types of grass that can be planted apply to all property owners. Restrictions are based on the drought stage in effect at the time a building permit is issued. Contact your water provider if you have questions about turf limitations.

  No Drought Drought Watch Drought Alert
Single-family homes 50 percent total of front/back yard can be grass. This includes a driveway or parking area. Same as No Drought.
New turf prohibited in common areas of neighborhoods, except for public or private community parks.
Installation of new turf limited to 50 percent of turf allowed under non-drought conditions.
Multifamily (apartments, condos) 30 percent of an area set aside for landscaping can be grass. This does NOT include parking lots or driveways.> Same as No Drought. Non-residential developments 25 percent of an area set aside for landscaping can be grass. This does NOT include parking lots or driveways. Installation prohibited except by permit. Under no circumstance shall a permit allow for over 50 percent of the turf allowed under non-drought conditions. Same as Drought Watch.
Prohibited types of grass N/A N/A Planting cool-season grasses such as tall fescue and ryegrass prohibited from May through August.
Planting of warm-season grasses such as bermuda and zoysia is permitted throughout year.
Note: Under all drought stages, individuals and associations may not restrict or prevent people from using water-efficient landscaping. This includes, but is not limited to, xeriscape, provided such landscaping receives appropriate architectural review and approval. Landscaping materials and designs may not be prohibited solely on the basis that they make use of water-efficient landscaping.
