Crested Eve's Needle
Austrocylindropuntia subulata var. Cristata
This cactus is actually a mutation of the normal form of Austrocylindropuntia subulata (Eve's Needle). These mutations are often referred to as Cristata (Crested) or Monstrosa in form. Something either in the plants genes or a climatic event caused these plants to grow in a spectacular fashion. Most of the time crested cactus do not bloom flowers and often they can be absent of thorns or spines. Pay attention to the plants health if you are lucky enough to get one of these rare occurrences, because they have developed so differently they may need the added benefit of afternoon shade, additional water during the summer months or especially well draining soils.
