Mirabilis multiflora
Southwestern native. Mojave Desert native. Rounded to spreading habit. Ovate to heart-shaped, gray-green to blue-green, 1/2 to 4 inches long, fleshy leaves with smooth margins. Leaves and stems can be smooth or hairy. Bright purple-pink trumpet-shaped flowers. Fragrant. Open in the late afternoon and bloom through the night, giving this plant its common name. May open in the morning on cloudy days. Flowers attract hummingbirds and nocturnal moths. Seeds are a food source for desert birds. Dies back to the roots in winter. Does not transplant well.
