Bamboo Muhly, Fairy Bamboo
Muhlenbergia dumosa
Southwestern native. Clumping ornamental grass. Arching, upright to weeping habit. Billowy, lacy texture. Slender, arching, woody brown stems. Bright green, narrow, up to 4 inche long leaves. Tan to pale purple-pink flowers and golden-brown seeds are not showy, but can give an overall pinkish to gold cast. Reminiscent of bamboo, hence the common name. Spreads by underground rhizomes, but not generally invasive. Does best with some shade in our area. May brown out in summer if given insufficient water. For best look cut down to around 3 to 5 inches above the ground in late winter.
