Dwarf Heavenly Bamboo, Nandina, Heavenly Bamboo, Sacred Bamboo
Nandina domestica

Delicate, upright, bamboo-like stems with lacy foliage. Not actually a bamboo. New growth starts out pale bronze maturing to a bright to medium green. Sprays of small white to cream flowers with yellow stamens in late spring to early summer. Small clusters of glossy red to red-orange berries. Partial or full autumn color change to red to bronze lasts through the winter. Amount of color change seems to depend on how cold and how much sun it gets. Needs protection from our hot summer winds and afternoon sun. Prefers acidic soils. May become chlorotic in our alkaline soils. Minimal pruning. In mature specimens, cut out a few of the older stems to allow new growth to fill in. Considered invasive in some part of the U.S.
