Maguey, Century Plant
Agave americana
This is a large, relatively fast growing succulent so give it plenty of room. Plant at least 6 feet from sidewalks, driveways and block walls to avoid its sharp leaf hooks and central spike. If given ample space Agave americana makes a dramatic statement in the landscape. Will produce many offsets or 'pups' that can be easily transplanted. After 10 years or more, the plant produces a branched, 15-40 ft. flower stalk bearing yellowish green flowers. Water thoroughly and infrequently to keep plant looking healthy.
