Medium to large shrub with narrow, gray-green leaves. Has male and female plants with slightly different yellow to yellow-green flowers. Seeds enclosed in showy 4-winged capsules that give this plant its common name. Extremely drought tolerant plant can survive off of 3 inches of annual rainfall once established but looks best with regular watering. Used as a fire retardant. Attracts birds and butterflies.
