Baja Fairy Duster
Calliandra californica
Open, irregular to vase-shaped shrub with small, deep green to blue-green, fern-like foliage. Loose, tassel-like, bright red flowers. Heaviest bloom usually in spring and autumn. Seed pods open violently, ejecting the seeds several yards away. Pods can be messy. Water once to twice a week in hot weather to keep blooming, once to twice a month in winter. May turn deciduous during colder winters in our area and experience some dieback. Prune in spring, after buds have sprouted. Remove dead wood and prune to compliment the natural form of the plant. Don't overdue pruning as you will lose flower production. Good near sunny patios, as a specimen plant, or as an informal hedge. Cultivar 'Maricopa Red' has darker red flowers.
