A medium sized tree with a rounded habit and dense canopy. Glossy, dark green, leathery foliage. Flowers are inconspicuous. Female trees produce dark brown, leathery pods, rich in sugar, which are milled as a substitute for chocolate. Litter from pods. Needs deep infrequent watering and does best in well-drained soils. Susceptible to Texas root rot, avoid overwatering. Frost tender in our area, especially when young.
