Rock Cotoneaster
Cotoneaster horizontalis

A dense, spreading, semi-prostrate shrub or groundcover. Rigid horizontal branches and branchlets form an interesting herringbone pattern covered in glossy, rounded, medium to dark green foliage. Tiny white to pink flowers are followed by small, rounded fruits that ripen to a bright red. Leaves turn an attractive red in the autumn. Evergreen to semi-evergreen in our area, it may lose its leaves for a short period in winter. Needs protection from the afternoon sun and adequate water to survive in the low desert. Prefers moist, loamy soils, but will do alright in rocky and sandy soils. Good drainage is a must. Be sure to plant in locations where it has plenty of room to spread out, it is quite unattractive if the branches must be cut short.
