Red Clusterberry, Parney's Cotoneaster
Cotoneaster lacteus

An attractive shrub with graceful arching branches. Dull, leathery leaves are dark green on top and fuzzy, white-green below. Large clusters of white flowers are followed by red to red-orange berries that hang below the foliage. Berries attract song birds. Some of the leaves may turn purple or show a purple-tint in winter, but generally not cold enough in our area for a full color change. Accepts full sun, but is grateful for some afternoon shade in the low desert. Tolerates drought, heat and poor soils. Does best in loamy, well-drained soils. Fertilize in spring for best appearance. Can be used as a screen or barrier plant, as a foundation plant or an informal hedge. Not suggested for formal hedges as it becomes very woody and detracts from its natural form. Minimal pruning required. Synonym: C. parneyi.
