Green Desert Spoon, Green Sotol
Dasylirion acrotrichum
This is an accent plant that blends well with other desert plants. Forms a dense rosette of leathery, medium to bright green, strap-like leaves with spiny leaf margins. A long woody stalk holds the cream to green-white catkin flowers well above the foliage. The bloom stalk can reach up to 15 feet tall. May not bloom every year. Eventually develops a trunk. Do not plant near walkways, the spines will grab clothing and skin. Give it plenty of room to reach its full size. Too often planted within a foot or two of a driveway, roadway, or walkway and as it matures, one side must be sheared off--this is very unattractive. Needs little water once established; watering the crown can cause rot. Requires minimal maintenance. Remove any dead leaves and remove caught debris as necessary. Not grown as commonly as the gray-leaved Dasyliron wheeleri.
