Purple Hopseed Bush, Hopseed Bush, Hopbush
Dodonaea viscosa
This shrub has a variable shape as it grows. It may start our as a shorter rounded shrub eventually putting on more height or it may shoot up quickly with a narrow habit, eventually rounding out. Leaves are 2 to 5 inches long, lance to oblong shaped, often with a slightly pebbly texture. Upper sides are glossy, medium to dark green with paler, dull undersides. Foliage turns a bronzy purple-green to purple in winter, some leaves may have a bronze to purple cast even in warm weather. Interesting winged papery seedpods are green to tan, sometimes with a pink tint. Works well as a screen, hedge, or background plant. Needs little pruning, but can be trained into a small tree. Tolerates wind, poor soil and heat. Some litter from seedpods. New plantings are more cold tender than established plants. The cultivar 'Purpurea' has more dramatic purple-red winter foliage and consistently bronze-green summer foliage, but is not as hardy.
