The Strawberry Hedgehog is one of the most common species of hedgehog cactus in the southwestern USA. Vibrant 3 inch purple to lavender flowers appear in early spring. The inch-long fruit is edible (if you can reach through the spines). It is said to taste like strawberry, and is eaten readily by birds and rodents. Water moderately from spring to fall and very lightly or not at all in winter. Provide excellent drainage.
