Turpentine Bush
Ericameria laricifolia
A rounded to spreading shrub native to much of the desert southwest. The small needle-like, bright to deep green foliage is covered in a sticky resin and smells like turpentine when crushed. In the fall, masses of bright yellow daisy-like flowers cover the branch tips, turning this somewhat inconspicuous plant into a show stopper. Fluffy cream to tan seed heads follow and may persist on the plant. Attracts butterflies and bees. Takes reflected heat and requires minimal water once established. Tends to become leggy in shade or if overwatered. If desired, shear after blooming for a more compact shape or tip prune to remove seed heads for a tidier appearance. More effective when massed. Variety 'Aguirre' is a clone.
