Purple-leaf Wintercreeper, Wintercreeper Euonymus
Euonymus fortunei 'Coloratus'
This evergreen trailing groundcover has a similar growth pattern to ivy, but can take more of our low desert sun. The small, glossy oval leaves have delicately toothed margins and turn a bright to deep purple-red in winter. The color depth depends on how cold our winter temperatures get. Flowers and seeds are sporadic and insignificant. Stems will root down where they touch soil. Also grows up vertical surfaces. Does best with some shade, preferably in the afternoons and prefers amended (but not rich) soils. A variegated variety is also available, but is not as hardy.
