Eysenhardtia orthocarpa
Qualifies for Tree Enhancement Program
Climate ResiliencyThis large shrub to medium-small tree produces a lacy canopy and general vase shape in maturity. Generally multi-trunked. Soft, medium green to gray-green pinnate leaves. Attractive terminal spike of small white flower smell strongly of vanilla and attract butterflies and bees. Flowers sporadically spring thru autumn. The small seed pods each house a single seed and are attractive to birds. Host for butterfly larva. Accepts our poor desert soils and does not need to be fertilized. Semi-evergreen in our area, though it may go deciduous in colder winters. Requires some judicious pruning to encourage a tree-like rather than shrubby shape. Will often remain smaller in shrub form.
