Pineapple Guava
Feijoa sellowiana
Leathery leaves are oval to oblong, glossy green above and silvery-green below, with a prominent vein pattern. The unusual flowers are quite attractive, with fleshy pale pink petals and prominent red stamens. The oval gray-green fruits that follow generally ripen in autumn or winter, falling off the plant easily when ripe. Flower petals and fruit are both edible. Attracts birds, hummingbirds and bees. Tolerates a wide range of soil and mulch types, but does best in well-drained, amended soils with organic surface mulch. Works well as a hedge, screen, foundation or backdrop planting, or can be pruned into a small tree or espalier. Low maintenance when left natural. Synonym: Acca sellowiana.
