Edible Fig, Fig Tree, Brown Turkey Fig
Ficus carica
An attractive tree with a roundly spreading habit. Generally multi-trunked. The dense canopy provides deep shade. The large rich green, deeply-lobed palmate leaves give it a distinctly tropical feel and contrast nicely with the smooth pale gray bark. This plant is most commonly grown for its edible fruit. Fruits on both old and new wood. Fruit should be allowed to ripen on the tree and does not last long once harvested. Flowers are inconspicuous. Prefers well-drained, amended soils and organic surface mulch. Prune for shape during winter dormancy. Many cultivars available. Fruit color and mature size vary by cultivar.
