Blanket Flower, Brown-eyed Susan, Indian Blanket Flower
Gaillardia aristata

This low, mounding, shrubby perennial is native to large sections of the U. S. and Canada. Has large, striking flowers with three-lobed, yellow and red petals radiating from a yellow to red-brown central disc. The division of yellow to red on the petals can vary widely between individual plants, from primarily yellow with red at the base to primarily red with yellow tips. The hairy, medium green foliage is generally lance-shaped, but varies between coarsely-toothed and smooth-edged to occasionally being lobed. Generally blooms late spring through early autumn. Butterflies are attracted to the flowers and birds like the seeds. Can be short-lived, but often reseeds into the landscape. Deadhead if desired to prolong blooming and reduce reseeding. In longer-lived specimens, divide every few years. Looks it best with some supplemental water in our area, but does not like to have its 'feet' wet. Many hybrid cultivars of Blanket Flower are available under Gaillardia x grandiflora. Some variations in size and flowers come in shades of red, yellow and orange.
