Photinia x fraseri
Upright, broadleaf evergreen. Useful for informal hedges, background planting, and spring foliage color. Leaves are elliptical, glossy and finely serrated. New growth starts red, fading to bronze and finally to deep green as it matures. Clusters of small white flowers with a scent some enjoy and others don't. Prune for shape. Often chlorotic here due to lack of nutrients or due to alkaline soils which prohibit nutrient uptake. Needs protection from our hot afternoon sun and summer winds. Susceptible to entomosporium fungal leaf spot, fire blight, mildew, aphids.
