Upright, open, spreading to irregular shape. Arching, spiny branches with sharp tips. Glossy, narrowly elliptical, medium to dark green leaves. Flattened clusters of small, fragrant, white flowers. Some people enjoy the fragrance and other do not. Clusters of hanging red-orange fruit. Fruit attracts birds. Can be grown as a shrub, trained into a hedge or up against walls (takes extra pruning). Prune for shape spring, fall, or winter. Susceptible to aphids, fire blight, root rot, scale, spider mites, and twig blight. Numerous cultivars available. Synonym: Cotoneaster pyracantha.
