Ravenna Grass, Hardy Pampas Grass, Plume Grass
Saccharum ravennae
Large warm-season clumping grass. Coarse, weeping blades with a white stripe down the center of each. Turns bronzy-brown to copper in winter. Flower/seed heads held above the main body on tall stems. Start out purple-pink, turning cream to silvery white, and finally to brown as the seeds mature. Overwatering may cause the flower stems to lean over rather than stand upright. Prefers lean, well-drained soils. Prune within a foot of the ground in late winter or early spring. Center of the clump tends to die out in older specimens. Divide and replant when that begins to occur. May self-seed in moist areas in the landscape. Has become invasive in some parts of the U. S. Synonym: Erianthus ravennae.
