Mexican Bush Sage, Velvet Sage
Salvia leucantha
Rounded, upright to sprawling habit. Arching, wooly, stems. Wooly, lance-shaped, 5 to 7 inches long, dark gray-green to blue-green leaves with prominent veins and pale undersides. Aromatic. Long terminal spikes of purple-tinged white flowers with dark purple calyxes. Entire flower is velvet-textured. Attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Cut spent flower spikes back to the leaves at the end of spring/summer bloom to ensure another full round of blooms in autumn. Will sometimes bloom well into the winter when the weather stays mild. Becomes ragged looking in late winter. Dies back to the ground in colder winters. Cut back close to the ground in late winter or early spring. Does best with amended soils. Cultivars 'Midnight' and 'Purple Velvet' have all purple flowers. Member of the mint family.
