Shrubby Senna, Shrubby Cassia, Wislizenus' Senna

Southwestern native. Upright, rounded to irregular habit. Rigid, woody, somewhat thorny, dark brown branches. Bright to olive green, 1/2 to 1 1/2 inch long leaves are divided into 4 to 6, small, smooth, rounded, oblong to oval leaflets with sharply pointed tips. Clusters of large, bright yellow, pea-like flowers. Attract bees and butterflies. Flattened, slender, dark brown, 4 long seedpods. Seeds are a food source for birds. Survives on minimal water, but lusher growth and better flower display with just a little additional water. Some litter from seed and flower drop. Winter deciduous. Leafs out in late Spring. Prune for shape in late winter or leave natural. Avoid shearing. Synonyms: Senna wislizenii, Cassia wislizeni, Cassia wislizenii.
