Joshua Tree
Yucca brevifolia
Tree-like Yucca from the Mojave Desert. Forms a trunk with multiple branches, plant must flower before new branches begin. Green-grey leaves are stout, short and sharp with serrated margins. Old leaves turn brown and fold back against the trunk to protect the plant. Greenish-white flowers in late winter early spring form from the rosettes. Fleshy green fruits follow and are eaten by wild horses and burros. Harvested Joshua Trees require special care for the first growing season by frequently misting the rosettes (green heads) with water until the plant re-establishes itself. Slow growing and extremely drought tolerant, plant in full or part sun and provide good drainage to prevent root rot. Collected plants must be tagged and have permits to be legal.
