African Sumac, Willow Rhus, Karee
Rhus lancea
Dense, rounded to spreading habit with slightly weeping appearance. Leathery, medium to bright green leaves divided into 3 narrow, willow-like leaflets. Clusters of yellow-green flowers are profuse but insignificant. Clusters of pea-like fruit ripen to tan or red-brown. Carried only on female trees. Fruit is a food source for birds. Attractive rough, reddish-brown bark. Usually multi-trunked. Prune for shape and to lift canopy. Tends to sucker from roots. Litter from leaf, flower and seed drop. Causes contact dermatitis in some people. A bit cold sensitive here, but established plants generally recover. Susceptible to Texas Root Rot.
