Southwestern native. Irregular, erect, rounded to oval habit. Large, medium green, compound leaves with 7-15 narrow, 1-3 inch long, lance-shaped, slightly hooked leaflets. Clusters of white to yellow-green flowers. Small, sticky, fleshy red fruits hang in clusters on branch ends and often stay into the winter. Carried only on female trees. Fruit is a food source for birds. Interesting pale gray bark with brown lenticels. Prune for good branch structure while young. Tends to sucker. Causes contact dermatitis in some people. Synonyms: Rhus copallina lanceolata, Rhus copallinum lanceolata.
