Southwestern native. Rounded to spreading, dense to open habit. Glossy, medium to dark green leaves with paler undersides, 3 to 4 inches long, divided into 3 to 9 leaflets. Leaflets oval with a pointed tip and smooth-edged. Leaves may become tinted maroon in winter cold. Clusters of small white flowers. Clusters of small red, sticky, hairy, flattened-oblong berries. Fruit is a food source for birds. Carried only on female plant. Good for natural hedges, screens, or background planting. Minimal pruning. Can be trained up as a small tree.
