Purple Robe Locust
Robinia x ambigua 'Purple Robe'

Upright, oval habit with an open canopy. Provides dappled shade. Branches can be thorny or thornless. Soft, medium green to blue-green, 8 to 10 inch long leaves divided into 7 to 19 elliptical, 1 to 2 inch long leaflets. New growth has a reddish-bronze cast. Fragrant wisteria-like clusters of purple-pink flowers. Blooms earlier and longer than the 'Idahoensis' cultivar. Attracts bees and butterflies. This cultivar is sterile and produces few seeds. May spread by suckers. Prune for shape and to develop a strong branching structure. Susceptible to locust borer, locust leaf miner, powdery mildew, scale, and verticillium wilt. Poisonous if ingested, toxic only in large quantities. Synonyms: Robinia ambigua 'Purple Robe', Robinia 'Purple Robe'.
