The Black-spine prickly pear has attractive 2 to 3 inch yellow flowers with red centers blooming in late spring or early summer. Growing from the pads are long black spines which contrast nicely against the gray to purple pads. Give this cactus a little extra water during the hot summer months. Synonyms: Opuntia violacea, Opuntia violacea macrocentra.
