Eve's Needle Cactus, Cane Cholla, Eve's Pin Cactus
Austrocylindropuntia subulata
This is a tree-like cactus that can grow up to 12 feet tall. This plant can be very deceptive in that it appears to be covered with long cylindrical succulent green leaves, however, behind these leaves are very sharp 3-inch long spines that are very painful if embedded in the skin. This cactus comes from high elevations in Ecuador and Peru, 8,000 to 12,000 feet, and blooms attractive red flowers up to 3 across. Plant grows best in filtered shade in the hottest deserts, protect from extreme cold and frosts. The non-aggressive variety Cristata is usually absent of spines and therefore can be used as a container plant on the patio. Synonyms: Cylindropuntia subulata, Opuntia subulata, Austrocylindropuntia exaltata.
